Chinese Martyr's Memorial

From Mae Salong to Thaton

Chinese Martyr's Memorial

Mae Salong Nok, Chiang Rai Thailand

Created By: The University of Hull, UK

Information

You can find this rather unusual memorial/museum approximately 1.5 kms after leaving Mae Salong on your way to Thaton. Most of the captions for the photographic exhibitions and maps are in Chinese but there is also some information in English. The memorial is devoted to the soldiers of the old 93rd MKT ‘lost army’ division who sought asylum in Thailand after breaking away from Moaist China. Many of them died fighting communist insurgents in northern Thailand during the 70s and 80s and they were also involved in the cross-border opium trade taking place in the ‘golden triangle’. However, as the museum offers a rather partisan picture of these historical events, you can watch our interview with Rosie, a historian living in the area, to gain a more objective understanding of this story.

Practical info: There are a couple of cafes and souvenir shops at the car park. Entry fee is 20 Baht.
