The community of Christiana dates from the arrival of the Nashville and Chattanooga Railroad in the 1850s. Col. James M. Grant, a railroad engineer, established a farm here and is credited with naming the village. An abolitionist, Grant may have wanted to honor stopped slave catchers from capturing runaways under the federal Fugitive Slave Act during the controversial “Christiana Riot” of 1851.
