The Mouat family had a citrus orchard and later grew hothouse tomatoes. Their story dates back many generations. In 1832, one of their ancestors, Richard Driver, went ashore with two fellow sailors from a whaling ship anchored off Port Chalmers. Local Māori ambushed them. One was murdered, one escaped into the bush, and Tani Nuiaranga, daughter of a local chief, saved the third. Tani and Richard married. One of their daughters married builder Peter Mouat in the late 1800s. In 1932, their daughter and grandson, Dick, bought five acres in Manuka Road. When the property was subdivided, Dick moved into the large house on the corner of Glenfield and Manuka Roads. His name on the gate at 2 Manuka Road attests to decades of tenure.
