The Clement family owned all the land south from The Knowle to Camelot Place. It covered six acres and was developed into a commercial orchard. The family lived in a stylish villa across from Mayfield School. Schoolchildren would often cross the Clement property in the morning and afternoon. The fresh fruit proved irresistible. On one occasion, a former student recounted, two boys stole apples and fled to the school, hoping to get lost in the crowd. But Almon Clement followed them onto the school grounds. Many schoolchildren were happy when the Clements moved and the more friendly Hewitson family took over the farm.
