Coal Oil Johnny the multi-millionaire was born John Washington Steel, a humble farm boy. Once oil was found on his property, he amassed a fortune of over $8 million by modern reckoning, spending all of it in less than one year as he earned the moniker and became a byword for the eccentricities of the wealthy.
