January 26, 1892 – April 30, 1926 3315 South Giles Avenue (formerly Forest) In 1921, at age 27 she received her pilot license in Paris, France making her the first African American woman to do so. Coleman lived with her brother Walter, who was a Pullman Porter, in Chicago around 1918. Coleman also took a manicuring course at a beauty school and opened a chili parlor before she became a daring pilot. Banker Jesse Binga and Robert S. Abbott assisted her with her tuition payments.
