Squirrel monkeys live in groups of up to 300 in the tropical rainforests of the northern Amazon Basin. Female squirrel monkeys form strong social bonds, each female having another female they remain in close contact with. This girlfriend is also the preferred babysitter for an infant. Squirrel monkeys ride on their mother’s back from the day they’re born, using their hands, feet, and tail to hold on tightly as their mother moves through the trees.
