The Dawn Redwood belongs to the conifer species and is related to the giant sequoia but sheds its leaves seasonally. The needles are opposite, 1-3 cm long. They are bright fresh green turning a foxy red-brown in the summer. There are two Dawn Redwood trees on Prospect Avenue and several other ones on the streets of Princeton, among them a beautiful example of Marquand Park
