Situated in the West Dockyard precinct only the rear of the building can be seen from St George's Street. Built for the Royal Navy in 1899 as a Detention Quarters and used as such by the RN until the facility was handed over to the SA Navy on 29 March 1957.Prior to the handing over, the DQ's was under the administrative control of HMS Afrikander. This facility corrected many a young man and set him on the right course in life. Strict naval discipline was instilled in them during their stay in detention. This Naval Detention Barracks has made its mark in Naval history as a place where discipline was strict, but always fair.
