The dromedary camel has one hump and a long, curved neck. Camels are adapted for desert living. Broad feet enable them to walk on sand, thick eyelashes provide protection from the blowing sand, callouses protect their knees, and their nostrils can close to keep sand out. Contrary to popular belief, their hump stores excess fat, not water. When water is available, they can consume up to 30 gallons. Camels are born without humps. The humps develop when they begin to eat solid food.
