East Bay Wilds is a plant nursery specializing in species native to the East Bay. Look at the sidewalk garden for examples of native species such as manzanitas, California lilac (Ceanothus) and the Western Redbud shrub (Cercis occidentalis) at the corner.
The term “native plants” refers to plants that have existed in a specific region or habitat for thousands of years before human intervention. Over time, they have adapted to the local climate, soil and environmental conditions, and have coevolved with native wildlife. The plants provide essential habitat, food and shelter; in return, the wildlife helps with pollination, dispersing seeds and controlling pests.
When non-native species replace or destroy native plants, it can disrupt these crucial symbiotic relationships, leading to ecological imbalances. By planting native species in your yard, you help maintain a healthy ecosystem and also use less water, pesticides and fertilizer. If you’d like to pick up some native plants for your home, East Bay Wilds is open on Fridays 9:30am to 4pm.
