Just as the demographics of North Brentwood’s residential population have changed in recent decades, so has the town’s commercial landscape. Black-owned businesses have been joined by White- and Latino-owned enterprises along Route 1.
In addition to the Prince George’s African American Museum & Cultural Center, a variety of businesses now line Rhode Island Avenue. Scooter Solutions and Cycles, Tacho’s Torneria Machine Shop, Euro Masters Auto Service, Shades By The Tint Techs, and New Life Tire Shop provide automotive services to the area. Pet owners can find grooming services at the Petite Pet Gallery and medical care at the Hyattsville Animal Hospital, the longest-running business in North Brentwood today. Fixtures Plus maintains a large warehouse for its large inventory of mannequins and other new and used store equipment.
Artists Katie Aldworth and Francisco Rosario create handmade products out of clay, wood, and metal at Material Things, a studio which offers classes in ceramics, woodworking, and welding. Pro-Colors Painting LLC and Beacon Building Products provide home and building improvement goods and services to the area. The Fuller Center for Housing of Prince George’s County maintains its office and thrift store here as well, with the goal of serving local families living below the poverty line.
One can expect North Brentwood’s businesses to continue to change over time, but the town’s entrepreneurial history will continue to be remembered by its residents, diaspora, and admirers of the community’s spirit.
