KOHUKOHU'S TRAGIC FIRES

In 1900 the burning two-storeyed hotel had to be pulled into the tide to prevent the blaze from spreading.

In 1922-23 Cooper's General Store caught fire. The flames arched across the road and destroyed the Library and Reading Room (present site of the Fire Station) and the Courthouse. Fire started in Wallace Supplies on Black Friday, 13 August 1954. the shop, the two-storeyed hotel, a bakery, tearooms and dressmaker's shop were burnt to the ground.

On January 27, 1967, Andrewes Store caught fire and was destroyed. Also destroyed was the Bank of New South Wales, the tobacconist, a men's hairdresser, the police station, tearooms and the offces of a lawyer, an electrician, and a dentist. Some of the buildings might have been saved ifthe tide had been in at the time - the fire hoses were not long enough to reach the water.
All that remained was the Post Office, Library and the Butcher's Shop.
