FIURolando · 23. A Wetland Is An Ecosystem
A wetland is an ecosystem that is primarily flooded seasonally or partly throughout the year. It is considered to be one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on the planet, home to species present in both aquatic and dry environments. This particular wetland area represents the first body of water on FIU's campus intentionally designed with faculty input and ecological function in mind. Here, a series of low-lying, herbaceous plants border a continuously flowing stream of shallow water. Notable species found here are Alligator Flag, Pond Apple, Sawgrass, and Muhly Grass.
