Fire plane

Greenham Cold War walk

Fire plane

England RG19, United Kingdom

Created By: Greenham Control Tower

Information

This scaled down mock-up of a C-130 Hercules transport aircraft was made by Ray Theodore Welding in Newbury (at a cost of £15,000) and installed in August 1986. It was used to train the base’s fire fighters as well as crews from Newbury and the local area. It was filled with dummy seats and passengers before being sprayed with aviation fuel. A pipeline was connected to the engine nacelle to simulate an engine fire.

Follow the narrow path to the right from the Fire ‘Plane westwards towards the bushes and walk through a copse. When you emerge from the trees follow the path to the left and you will see the bunkers.
