The first building in Hutchinson originally sat on this lot in1871. A common way to encourage people to settle in new town was to offer a free plot to the first person to construct a building on the newly platted town land. A.F. Horner had become a professional at this. He had a prefabricated building constructed and after claiming his free plot in Newton, Kansas, the building was disasembled and transported to this spot. Here he reassembled the 16'x60' wooden structure and claimed his free plot in Hutchinson. Horner would later repeat this strategy, taking the building with him yet again and moving west. Later C.C. Hutchinson built and organized the first bank in Hutchinson in 1874. Another version of the 1st National bank replaced Hutchinson's in the 1910s before the current bank was built in the 1970s.
