The first United States post office in Wilkinsburg was established in May 1840 under the name of Wilkinsburgh. Pres. Martin Van Buren named Abraham Stoner as postmaster. The post office was located in the storeroom of Stoner's dry goods store. After 50 years, in 1891, the final h was dropped, and the name of the post office became Wilkinsburg.
