Foley House ~ 45 Main Street

Completed in time for Confederation in 1867, this British classical residence and mercantile was built by Declan Foley - Irish immigrant, prominent businessman and landowner—and stayed in the family for many generations. Note the limestone quoins, cornices, lug sills, and keystone arches that were quarried and cut locally and transported via the Rideau. Westport manufactured brick was used for the unusual three-brick thick walled design. Many original elements remain within the house that was renovated in 2009. Sir John A. MacDonald among other prominent dignitaries overnighted here while traveling by steamship on the Rideau.
