The Jefferson Memorial Building, built in 1913 with profits from the Louisiana Purchase Expedition is the current home of the museum.
In 2000, a significant building addition - design by H.O.K. (Hellmuth, Obata & Kassabaum) was completed. Recognized by American Institute of Architects' Committee on the Environment as an example of a "green museum", the addition features a ground-to-roof southern glass facade, includes substantially more exhibition space, as well as an auditorium, classrooms, a restaurant and gift shop.
General admission into the museum is free.
