This late 1950s building, considered to be a fine example of its era, was designed by Llew Piper and Associates for use by the Auckland Harbour Bridge Authority to house its control room for the toll plaza, once located directly across from it on the motorway. Expensive bronze windows were installed to counteract the salty conditions. Following the end of tolling on the motorway in the 1980s, the building was taken over by New Zealand Police. Today it hostsseveral different police units including he Motorway Patrol, Traffic Alcohol Group, Highway Patrol, and the Serious Crash Unit, as well as the Auckland Police Pipe Band.
The tunnel to the right goes under the motorway to the extensive Shoal Bay intertidal area. Turn left up Tennyson Street, right onto Alfred Street, right onto Nelson Street, and then take the public walkway to Stafford Road. Look across Stafford Road.
