Former Post Office (1 Kaipātiki Road)

On 6 December 1883, thirty sections of the subdivided Mayfield Estate, encompassing 250 acres along the west side of today’s Glenfield Road, were put up for auction. Initial sales did not materialise, but most lots were sold by 1890. By this point, the community had come to be known as Mayfield.

The first post office in the area was opened on 23 November 1888 in the home of John Freeman. The office went by the name Freemans since Mayfield was already in use elsewhere in the country. Deliveries were often made in treacherous conditions due to the poor quality of the roads and the steep grades, especially north to the Lucas Creek basin.

After over twenty years operating as Freemans, the post office was renamed Glenfield on 11 March 1912. The community quickly adopted the name and now the only reference to Mayfield is Mayfield Road.
