G.B. Greene’s Anchor

Referred to as the “Queen of the River”, the G.B. Greene was a double-decked wheel steamboat built by the Ottawa Improvement Company in 1896. Leaving from Britannia Park, it took up to 250 passengers on daily leisure activities up the Ottawa River, such as picnics at Chat’s falls or moonlight dance cruises on Lac Deschênes (Britannia Bay area). The ship was reconstructed after a fire in 1916, but a decline in sight-seeing activities after World War I resulted in its conversion for use in logging and its eventual dismantling in 1946. The Britannia Yacht Club (BYC) acquired the Greene’s anchor, bell and wheel. The latter are displayed at BYC.
