In 1943, Julia Chenault organized the first Girl Scout Council in Decatur, Alabama. In 1944 the Wheeler Area Girl Scout Council approached the city of Decatur asking that they be permitted to convert the open-air band shell structure located in Delano park into a meeting place for Girl Scouts. The city of Decatur agreed. In 1947, the stone framework was enclosed with cement blocks. The Girl Scout Little House was completed and ready for meetings to begin. The Girl Scout Little House opened it's doors to serve as a Council Office and a meeting place for girls and adults of North Central Alabama. It has housed special Girl Scout events, Girl Scout troop meeting and sleepovers, leader training, recruitments and celebrations. The Girl Scout Little House has become a special place of memories for many generations of Scouts and their leaders.
