The Guam Kingfisher can no longer be found in the wild due to the introduction of the brown tree snake, domestic cats, and other non-native predators into its habitat. In 1986, the last 29 Guam kingfishers were brought in to captive care to protect it from becoming completely extinct. Thanks to efforts by the Association of Zoo and Aquarium institutions, these birds are reproducing with plans for eventual reintroduction into the forests of Guam. Sedgwick County Zoo is currently working to incubate and hatch Guam kingfisher eggs with the goal of releasing the birds on the Palmyra Atoll in the Pacific Ocean.
