Batteries Rice, McCook, and Bumpus
From left to right batteries Rice, McCook, and Bumpus were mounted with 5,6, and 3-inch M1900 rapid-fire guns, repectively. These disappearing guns were mounted in 1904 and updated in 1916. The largest 6-inch gun could fire a 100 lb shell 8 miles to sea. Unlike the larger mortars, gun batteries had line-of-sight targeting.
Explore these batteries cautiously and remember they are over 100 years old. The space around these batteries is now lush with vegitation, but in active duty times the whole island was devoid of vegitation.
