Originally called Robbie's Corner, Halls Corner is the oldest commercial building in Takapuna. The building dates to 1896 when the manager's office of the Rangitoto saltworks was hauled to Takapuna Beach and then dragged to Lake Road. David Robertson opened the business as the Lake General Store & Bakery, with his brother Henry running the bakery. In 1903, the Robertsons sold the store to William Bell, who in turn sold it to William Hall in 1907.
Hall benefited greatly from the opening of the Takapuna Tramway in 1911. His store sat at the crossroads where the tramway split to loop around Lake Pupuke. To capitalise on this, he built the Sea View Tea Rooms and added a wrap-around veranda to the store. He also attracted the Bank of New Zealand to open a branch office inside. Over the years, Hall bought property behind the store up Lake and Hurstmere Roads, leasing the spaces to other businesses and jumpstarting the commercial development of Takapuna. The Hall family continued to run the store into the 1930s and retained ownership of the building until 2014.
Ingham's Hardware took over in the late 1930s and became Halls Corner’s longest tenant. In 1953, the structure was heavily renovated under the direction of C. B. Watkins, with nearly every trace of the original building demolished or integrated into the new design. The last visible part of the old store, the bakehouse, was demolished in 1957. Ingham's Hardware stayed in the building until 1985.
Since the mid-1980s, Halls Corner has hosted several apparel stores as well as Trade Aid and TSB Bank.
