Information

Hart-Nettleton House, c. 1885. Queen Anne Victorian style with steep gable and hipped and dormered roofs, and a large veranda porch. This home has a grand entryway accented by an arched dormer on the front porch at the top of a cascading masonry staircase. The front entry door and matching sidelights are ornately trimmed and framed within a bay foyer, and a corresponding bay window is directly above on the second floor. The various shaped and sized windows are newer but seem to be a good representation of the period.

Hart bought the property for $480 in 1878 “with dwelling house” from Eli D. Preston. Hart built the Queen Anne house circa 1885. Later that year the property was quit-claimed to Eliza Nettleton for $2,226.00. Eliza died in 1898. In 1904 the property was sold to Oliver A Beckwith who owned two dry goods stores, one in Canton and the other on School St in Unionville. According to Jack Crocket, curator Unionville Museum, he may have been one of the richest men in Farmington. After his death in 1914, his wife married Dr William Horton.
