Built in 1795-1800, the Federalist style Heard house was home to John Heard, his children, and later his grandchildren. The house is now home to the staff offices and the permanent collection of the Ipswich Museum, which includes artifacts from the Heard's China trade enterprise, the largest collection of the works of artist Arthur Wesley Dow, works by the students of Dow, and artifacts and documents relating to the Female Seminary of Ipswich, among other many objects and archives.
