The statue, recently removed from the corner of Market and S. Alamo, was unveiled in October of 2009. It commemorated former U.S. Congressman Henry B. Gonzalez, the first Hispanic elected to represent Texas in U.S. Congress. He represented District 20 for 38 years, rising to become Chairman of the Finance Committee. Affectionately known as "Henry B.," he made his name by conducting the longest filibuster in Texas history to defeat pro-segregation bills in the Texas Senate in the 1950s. FBI records attest to several assassination attempts against him. San Antonio's Convention Center is named after Henry B. Gonzalez.
