Created By: The Heritage Center of Murfreesboro and Rutherford County
The historic Rutherford Hospital, built in 1927, was constructed by the Commonwealth Fund of New York as part of its commitment to rural health care and to the child health demonstration program established in the county three years earlier. Mary E. Marshall and Margaret B. Haynes served on the initial board of directors. As the first superintendent of the hospital, public health nurse Mary F. Petitte ran everyday operations.
