Joseph lay was an inventor and manufacturer. One of the needed objects he made for the community were corn husk brooms. It is rumored that runaway slaves traveling North on the Underground Railroad could stop and stay at this house on their way to Canada.
Major Hoadley also ran a blacksmith shop out of this barn, or at least one that was located in the same place as this updated version. As cars began to replace horse-driven carriages the need for blacksmiths declined and Hoadley stopped running his business and just used it for storage, probably what it is used for today.
