Hotel Torrentius was built in the second half of the 16th century and is attributed to the Liège architect Lambert Lombard. It is one of the most beautiful gems of patrician architecture in Liège. The hotel was built for the prelate, poet and philologist Liévin van der Beken, who is also known for his contribution to the founding of the Jesuit College of Leuven.
The building is located near the St. Cross Church and was purchased in 1978 by architect Charles Vandenhove to establish his studio. With Hotel Torrentius, Vandenhove masters a new classical language that he will later use in iconic operations, such as the renovation of the Hors-Château district.
The interior, with artistic interventions by Daniel Buren, Olivier Debré and Léon Wuidar, among others, testifies to the will to give contemporary art a place in the restored building.
