Artist Statement:
“The real voyage of discovery is not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes." ~ Marcel Proust
My artistic journey started in earnest 12 years ago. I wanted to pursue Fine Arts in a disciplined and challenging environment, surrounded by talented painters and excellent teachers. I joined a 2 year program – The Landscape Atelier, founded by prominent landscape artist, Deborah Paris. I studied art history and the techniques and nuances of landscape painting that served the masters of the American Tonalist period of the 19th Century, including George Innes, James Whistler and Charles Warren Eaton during a time when the Berkshires were pastoral and pristine.
The program was revelatory, and I became a student not just of painting but of nature – its diversity and grandeur as well as its fragility and need for protection. Our landscape is threatened. Each year I see evidence of the subtle changes that signal dire consequences. The Berkshires is irreplaceable and must endure.
When I paint the Berkshire landscape, I am often overcome by its beauty, power and majesty. Every time I venture into the field to draw or paint, I am hopeful that the Berkshires are seen with new eyes – mine and yours. Proust’s words urge me to weave memory and intent with eyes that see more than what is observed in a moment, creating art that sees beyond the past or present, to paint what I feel about the landscape and to spark joy, conversation and community and to inspire our shared responsibility to preserve our cherished landscape.
