Huntsville

The town of Hunstville found its beginnings in the arrival of DC Oakes in 1859 to what is now Jellystone. Oakes was one of the first pioneers to Colorado. It is said that the town was laid out by Sarah Coberly.

Huntsville existed from around 1861 until 1878. The flood in 1862 that wiped out much of Denver destroyed a good portion of Huntsville as well. The town prospered for several years until the arrival of the railrod in 1878. The rail company did not put a train station in Huntsville and so the town gradually faded away. What businesses were left at the town either closed or moved to Larkspur.

At its peak, Huntsville had about 200 people. There was a sawmill, hotel, grocery store, post office and stage coach stop. The stage coach line was run by H. G. Weibling who was also the contractor for delivering mail to the post office. The first post office in Douglas County was the one in Huntsville. Its postmaster was DC Oakes.
