Along the Southwest Trail lies 3 hydrological monitoring wells tucked amongst the vegetation. These wells are drilled into the Biscayne Bay aquifer at three different depths: 20 feet, 40 feet, and 80 feet. Students, professors, and the United States Geological Survey use these wells to monitor the salinity, pH, and other characteristics of South Florida’s water quality. With climate change and sea-level rise, it is becoming increasingly more important to monitor the amount of saltwater that is invading our freshwater source.
