Before there were refridgerators, people needed to find a way to keep food cold so that it would not spoil. They built buildings like this one. It is a thick-walled, cool, dark place that would slow the melting process of ice. It's not as good as a refridgerator, but you'd be surprised how long they could keep things cool.
