If you look to the left of the path along the fence line you may see some large woody shrubs that may have a white flower or red fruit depending on the season. These are Amur Honeysuckle. While these plants are fast growing and the flowers may smell sweet, they are a non-native species from Asia that is crowding out native plants in our Ohio forests (Ohio DNR, Division of Forestry, 2018). The park department frequently cuts back and removes the Honeysuckle but they are reseeded by birds dropping honeysuckle seeds from other areas (D. Allen, personal communication, March 16, 2018). You can help fight this invasive plant by eliminating it from your own yard. The Ohio State University Extension has detailed instructions for home gardeners on identifying and fighting invasive honeysuckle.
