Originally located at 785 New North Road, this wooden building on the corner of Lloyd Avenue was, in 1880, the first shop to be constructed in Mount Albert. J Hibbs’ general store and post office was subsequently let out to Mrs Saunders, a confectioner, in 1915. It has since operated as a fishmonger’s and a shoe shop before being turned over to residential use more recently. The villa-style portion behind the main building is a slightly later extension. In the 1920s, the retail sector of Mount Albert shifted slightly to the southwest, closer to the train station and the end of the tram line.
