Jamia Masjid Al-Mustafa Mosque (621 Great South Road)

Also known as South Auckland Muslim Association Mosque, the proper façade of the structure can be viewed front on from 26 Mangere Road. The initial property, much smaller than its current size, was first purchased by the New Zealand Muslim Association in 1982 in order for Muslims in South Auckland to have the ability to attend prayers more regularly. The property then transferred to the South Auckland Muslim Association after its creation in 1989, and extensive work was undertaken in the 1990s in preparation for the construction of the mosque that currently stands.

More space was required to meet the council’s requirements, and so the design and construction did not begin until two adjacent properties were purchased in 1995. Key to the negotiation of these purchases were Haji Dr. Preena and the late Demal/Jamal Hodzic, the latter of whom is also credited as having a major role in the design and planning of the mosque and was personally acquiring the Turkish chandeliers underneath the mosque’s central dome. He was the longest serving Patron, Executive committee member, and Mosque Committee member of the South Auckland Muslim Association until his death in 2004, the same year that the mosque’s construction was completed.

The mosque is one of the largest mosques in New Zealand and all are welcome at their services. The South Auckland Muslim Association actively supports initiatives that advocate for social harmony, provides community services, and aims to raise awareness of Islam in the community.
