Kingley Park offers panoramic views of the Cape Fear River, plus historical markers describing the Ship Quarantine Station and Southport's fishing history. The Quarantine Station was located on the river to the north. After the Civil War, the station was built on a large concrete slab held on pilings. The station decontaminated ships with burning sulphur and later with formaldehyde. Crew members were cleaned in baths. Yellow fever was a big threat from ships coming from southern waters.
