One of Stanislaus County’s most historic structures is the covered bridge which opened May 30th, 1863, It was built by David Locke to replace an earlier bridge that was swept away in the town’s most disastrous flood of 1862. In 1869 the bridge was sold to Thomas Roberts who then sold it to Stanislaus County in 1884. Since that time it has been tool free. In June of 1981 the bridge was closed to vehicle traffic because of safety concerns. The US Army Corps of Engineers took it over and had it restored by a master bridge builder, Milton Graton. It was dedicated in May 1989. It is 330 feet long and is the longest structure of its kind west of the Mississippi River. It is now only for walking visitors, bicycles and horses.
