A life-size statute of Lila Mae Brock stands in the pedestrian plaza near Unity Park. Ms. Brock dedicated her life to the upward mobility of other people. Her efforts in the Southernside neighborhood resulted in the opening of the Southernside Community Center in 1982. Ms. Brock was also successful in getting the federal government to invest in low cost housing for the area. Ms. Brock was the recipient of numerous awards, including the prestigious Governor's Order of the Palmetto and the Jefferson Award.
