Created By: Heritage Center, Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word
In 1966, Archbishop Carboni, papal nuncio in Lima, asked the Congregation to give at least four Sisters to take over certain nursing services at the Hospital Central de Policía. The police force consisted of three different units, the largest of which was non-commissioned men. These men were recruited from the poorer and poorest classes in Peruvian society, and were referred to as serranos (from sierra). It was to the needs of these men and their families that the Sisters responded.
From the inception of the mission, HCP was plagued by a shortage of basic necessities that were considered essential for minimum satisfactory care of the sick and injured. The limitations placed upon the initiative and authority of the Sisters also obstructed their efforts. The mission closed after seven years, but the Sisters did bring about many lasting improvements in the management and direct care of the patients.
In 1988, the Sisters returned to Lima to establish a house for formation of new members. The Sisters living there participate in the life of the community and parish, engaging in pastoral work and lay formation.
