FIURolando · 36. Limestone Occurs At
Limestone occurs at or near the surface of the Southeastern peninsula of Florida. It forms along the Atlantic Coastal Ridge and extends beneath the Everglades, where it is commonly covered by a thin layer of organic freshwater sediments. Limestone is often composed of the skeletal fragments of coral and mollusks. In Miami, the limestone forms much of the Biscayne Aquifer due to its porous and permeable surface. This allows for the rock to naturally filter out unwanted sediment and litter. Areas of exposed limestone can be found along the trail with small epiphytic species growing directly on the rock.
