Information

The Oakland Branch was organized on October 2, 1892 in a parlor at 525 Sixth Street. John Dalton presided, assisted by B.H. Roberts. Six members were present. From 1900-1903 the Oakland Branch met in the old California Academy at 1015 Clay Street. From 1903 - 1906 the Oakland Branch met at 1156 Washington Street. Starting in 1906, it met in a rented hall at 12th and Franklin Streets. It's next location was here, the Maccabee Temple at Eleventh and Clay Streets. The Oakland Branch met here until 1923, when it started meeting at Porter Hall on what is now MLK Boulevard.

The Maccabee Temple was built for the Knights of the Maccabees fraternal organization at 11th and Clay. While many features have been lost or covered, the building is still there.
