Information

The Malmesbury Park Wall (c. 1893) was built to separate the two estates of Charminster that were occupied by the working classes in one estate and the middle to upper classes in the other estate. The wall was erected to prevent the working classes from travelling through the middle to upper-class estates to work. So, instead, the workers had to travel a longer route around the wall to reach their destination. However, in 1907 the wall was eventually torn down which once again allowed them an easier access route to work.

A notice appeared alongside the wall with a £1 reward for reporting those who damaged the wall, which suggested that there was an issue with regular vandalism regarding the wall.

As you walk down the road, parts of the walls are still visible in the back gardens of the houses which are now used as a divider for the gardens.

The photograph with an aerial view shows the modern placement of the wall and how it stretched the gardens between Lowther Road and Stewart Road.
