After Ms. Sis’s initial purchase of Sis’s Tavern, she started to purchase other lots in North Brentwood and developed her real estate empire. She purchased eleven individual lots in Block B of North Brentwood in the 1960s and 1970s. Within the eleven individual lots were seven properties. She lived with her mother, Daisy Newton, at 4540 41st Avenue, and adopted two children, Rita and John. Her children lived in North Brentwood in the 1990s.
Marie Alice Walls (Ms. Sis) owned the following lots: 1, 2, 3, 12, 15, 18, 19, 21, 39, 40, and 41 (pictured and highlighted above).
Ms. Sis was not the only real estate mogul in North Brentwood. Jeremiah Hawkins, from whom Ms. Sis purchased Sis’s Tavern, also managed real estate properties in North Brentwood. Mr. Hawkins was the first Mayor of North Brentwood and rented out homes on Webster Street.
