Memorial Gates on George Street
Built in 1919/20, these limestone pillars and iron memorialize the 11 Westport men who gave their lives in World War I. The Westport Women’s Institute raised the funds for these handsome gates. "Decoration Day" (the predecessor of Remembrance Day) was held at the gates in June 1920, with 11 children laying real flowers to recognize the heroes who gave their lives. Remembrance Day ceremonies occurred at this site for years prior to the establishment of the Cenotaph, originally located on Spring St.
