Comemorating the sinking of the JOHN D. GILL by a German Uboat on 3/12/1942. Eight crew members and three armed guards were picked up by the US Coast Guard and landed at Southport, North Carolina. Six officers, 13 crewmen and four armed guards were lost and many of the survivors were badly burned. Seaman Catalino Tingzon, a nativeof the Philippines, is buried in Southport's Northwood Cemetery.
