This sundial stands as a memorial to the former staff of the Ōtāhuhu Railway Workshops who lost their lives during the First and Second World Wars. The monument was first unveiled at the Ōtāhuhu Railway Workshops on 29 October 1949. It was later moved to a new location within the workshops in April of 1977, and its this location where our first photograph here was taken, though little of the surrounding buildings can be seen. After the workshops finally closed in 1992 the monument was placed into storage before finding its new home in its current location. The monument was rededicated on 11 September 1993 in a ceremony performed by Padre Cecil Wright, Reverend Dr. D. Holt, and J. Goodison & N. Leaf from the New Zealand Sapper’s Association.
